Here is a interesting story which illustrates Chris’ design skills: Several years ago I lost my wide-band wedding ring, which was a match for my husband’s but with added diamonds (of course!). I contacted the original designer who made another ring. Then miraculously the lost ring turned up, 3 years later!
Chris cut the replacement and fashioned a beautiful pendant and earrings. I was thrilled!

A pear-shaped diamond weighing 101.38 carats has achieved a rare feat, becoming the most expensive piece of jewellery ever sold in cryptocurrency.
The exceptional D-colour, flawless diamond achieved $15.4 million (US$12.3 million) as part of Sotheby’s inaugural ‘Luxury Edit’ sale series in Asia. The stone, dubbed ‘The Key 10138,’ was purchased by an anonymous private collector in a single-lot auction.
“We are thrilled to witness a historical moment, when one of the Earth’s oldest and rarest treasures was purchased using humanity’s newest universal currency,” says Wenhao Yu, deputy chair of Sotheby’s Jewellery in Asia. “Today, we saw active participation from collectors across the globe, as well as interest from new clients well beyond the traditional pool of collectors. By introducing this innovative payment option to our luxury sale, we open up new possibilities and expand our reach into a whole new clientele, many of whom are from the digitally savvy generation.”
The gem, which is from Diacore, is the second-largest pear-shaped diamond to ever be sold publicly, Sotheby’s reports.

So, here it is: The New Normal
To make the appointment please phone 613-345-4507. From there we might have to do a VIRTUAL Appointment so that we can ascertain what your needs are. The best part of doing this type of meetup is that it will be as close as sitting across from you and chatting like we have done in the past.
We will institute a PASS-OFF system by appointment only via a drop-box at our front door. This will ensure low risk for covid-19 contamination.
Once received, we will clean and sanitize your jewellery so that we will be able to review for a repair quote, to perform an appraisal or to prep for custom work.
All repairs will have email quotes sent for approval. Once approval is received and payment is made they will go into the repair queue.
Once a job is complete we will notify you and arrange a pickup appointment time. Once again we will institute the PASS-OFF system via a drop-box at our front door. This will ensure low risk for covid-19 contamination.
I once again thank you for your patience at this time.
I am confident that we will get through this. We are all looking forward to the day when we can once again have a relaxed and easy access to all spaces and people.

Sapphire is a gemstone variety of the mineral corundum, an aluminium oxide (α-Al2O3).
It comes in other colours depending on the amounts of other trace elements such as iron, titanium, chromium, copper or magnesium. This can give corundum blue, yellow, pink, purple, orange or greenish colour. Chromium impurities in corundum yield a red tint, and the resultant gemstone is called a Ruby, Sapphire’s sister stone.
To help celebrate this gem is the Logan Sapphire, pictured It is a flawless specimen from Sri Lanka, a cushion-cut stone which possesses a rich deep blue color and is the second largest (blue) sapphire known, weighing 422.99 carats. This stone is HUGE! See it on the video.
Sapphires are among the most durable naturally occurring elements in the world. Gemstones are rated on their ability to withstand scratching based on a system called the Mohs Scale of Hardness, and sapphires score a 9 out of 10. The only natural item that can scratch a sapphire is a diamond, which has a 10 on the Mohs Scale. The durability of sapphires makes them an excellent choice for engagement rings and other jewelry you plan to wear every day.
Sapphires are mined in many places throughout the world, including Australia, Tanzania, Thailand, Cambodia, Malawi, Madagascar, Sri Lanka, the United States, and more.
The most famous royal sapphire today is the engagement ring given by England’s Prince Charles to Lady Diana Spencer in 1981, and now worn by Princess Catherine. It features an 18-carat oval blue sapphire surrounded by diamonds.

Going back in time to 1796 - French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte gave to his beloved wife Josephine a two stone sapphire and diamond engagement ring. This same ring sold at auction for close to a million dollars in 2013.

David and Nancy came to see me last fall after Nancy had lost her diamond from her engagement ring. I’ll let them tell their story from here ...
“Our first thought was to simply have it replaced. However some thought and the fact that we would be celebrating our 53rd anniversary on May 14, 2019 we looked around to see what stone was used to celebrate 55 years, since this is how long we have known each other. Alexandrite came up as a stone traditionally used to celebrate 55 years. Nancy thought that would be a good idea and was especially intrigued by the changing colours under various lighting conditions.
We contacted various jewellers to see who could do the job and how affordable… or not... it would be. We were impressed with the service at Palko Jewellery after discussions with Carol. We discussed various options for replacement: - original diamond, synthetic Alexandrite, or genuine Alexandrite. Since colour change was important to Nancy and I we decided on the real thing, and everything was ready for Christmas including repairing the wedding band as well.
It has been over 6 months now and Nancy is still intrigued with the Stone. I often can see her studying it in various lights as we enjoy lunch together. This has turned out to be one of our best decisions and the service and choice of Alexandrite has exceeded our expectations. David Shaver

What a lovely opportunity! I can easily remember my favourite “moment”! Actually, the entire process of designing and creating my ring was thrilling but when you revealed the final result, I recall feeling absolutely giddy! Amazing what a little trinket can do to a girl! LoL!
Pamela Prince
My moment in time is more than a mere moment, but the story of my 31 years of marriage to my husband Tom.
After my solitaire diamond engagement and 10th anniversary diamond solitaire rings were constantly worn together for many years, they were badly needing to be re-set. On the occasion of our 15th anniversary we decided to combine the two diamonds into one new setting. With the help of Chris and Carol Palko we chose the ideal ring in which to place them and added three small diamonds to balance the setting. For our 20th anniversary we added the matching wedding band. Then for our 25th anniversary we added one more diamond to complete the ring. It became the story of our marriage, not merely one milestone in our time together. I now have a wonderful memory to keep with me, since my husband passed away 2 1/2 years ago, shortly after our 31st anniversary.
Now I need to expand the ring size to accommodate my growing joints with arthritis so I can continue to wear my momento…the results of a life well lived! Judy Utman
Where to begin ? I have many favourite moments in time. Watching my grand daughters necklaces become more meaningful and beautiful each year, or the necklace designed for a special birthday or my mother’s old rings turning into a gorgeous gold nugget. However, I must admit my most memorable and amazing moment shared with you two talented people was when Chris along with Carol’s help transformed my engagement ring and an anniversary ring into one stunning ring that I still enjoy wearing and receive compliments on. Shirley Coggan
When Chris suggested very gently he may be able to improve on my suggestion for a piece and of course it was perfect! Evelyn Doyle

Tall ships are coming once again to Brockville! That is great! I’m so excited that Tall Ships are coming once again to our shores. Their grace and majesty mark a special spot in history. I have a strong rooted fondness for Tall Ships as my grandfather, John T. Baker, was a shipwright in England working in the Gosport dockyards in the early 1900’s. He had worked for Camper and Nicholsons which has, over time, become a very viable luxury watercraft business.
The All Ships Festival (2015) in Brockville, is a celebration of life in the 1000 Islands region and an opportunity for tourists and citizens of the City of Brockville to explore the majestic waterfront during this ‘festival on the river’. You will see tall ships, small ships, motorboats, self-powered paddle boats, cruise ships, sailing ships, Sea-Doos, Hydroplanes, Antique Boats, and so much more … The All Ships Festival (2015) is family fun for all ages. See full details on the Brockville Tourism site and All Ships Festival site.

The Black’s story – Easy does it First things First
Morley George Black was the beloved father to his four loving children: Greg, Tammy, Calvin and Sheldon. After his passing in May 2014 his children came to Chris and I to see if we could help create four memorial pieces.
What Sheldon and Greg brought to us was an amazing bracelet that had belonged to Morley. It was a sobriety bracelet with “Easy does it, First things First” inscribed on it.
Morley used it to mark his years of sobriety by adding a stone to it each year. At the time of his passing there were 25 stones marking the passage of time. A tribute to a life changing decision that the family wanted to embrace and continue in remembrance for future generations.
After speaking with Sheldon and Greg, it was decided to put together a design similar to George’s original bracelet plate that could be used as either a bracelet or pendant and the stones would then be divided between the 4 siblings.
Chris was able to put together the Computer Assisted Design (CAD) renderings for the family’s approval. They loved what they saw and gave the go ahead right away.
Chris then proceeded to make a mold so that multiple plates could be produced for the four pieces.
Chris created the back of the plate to read: “In loving memory of our Father MGB May 31 2014”.
He also styled a compass rose with the following significance: the back of the two larger diamonds, represent the parents and the back of the 4 smaller diamonds the children.
The family were absolutely thrilled when they saw the finished product. Chris and I feel absolutely honored to be a part of continuing Morley Black’s legacy of “Easy does it, First things First”.

]]>Shirley’s Custom Nugget Story:
Shirley’s parents were married in the early 1940’s. After many years of marriage her mother lost the centre diamond of her wedding set. Her father bought her mother a new wedding ring set and the old was put in the back of a drawer for safekeeping. It was passed on to Shirley at a later date. Having her mother’s original wedding rings was very special to Shirley. She had them tucked away in a drawer until she had an inspired thought ~ to make a very special present for her sister made from her mother’s wedding ring set ~ A Custom Nugget Pendant from the Old Gold!
When making custom nuggets from old gold, each one is unique. They can be made from all types of gold items and a mix of different karats (purities). In Shirley’s case only her mother’s gold rings were used as she wanted this to be a very special memento for her sister.
Chris, our Designer/Goldsmith, was able to reuse the two shoulder diamonds, keeping them in their original settings from the ring, and put them directly onto the nugget. He also made the bail (hanger) for the pendant from the wedding band – a nice accent for the Custom Nugget Pendant.
Shirley was absolutely delighted with the outcome which is shown above!

]]>Most people only look at a gem and see the beautiful sparkles and flashes of colour from their jewellery with out ever knowing what is on the inside. There is a whole new world waiting to be discovered!
As best said by John Koivula, Chief Gemologist at GIA in introduction to Anthony de Goutière’s book “Wonders within Gemstones”
… Complex, dramatic and enlightening, the seemingly limitless variety to be found in the microscopic world of gems can easily capture our minds and propel us on an adventurous journey that will be as fascinating as any we will ever undertake…envision twisted and swaying undersea kelp gardens when examining the cool green fluid inclusions found in an emerald from the mines in Colombia … Golden crystals of rutile in quartz become shafts of sun-browned straw and an iridescent healed fracture may appear as a human fingerprint … The variety is without end.
Take a look at the inside of a gemstone with Anthony de Goutière using photo art or photomicrography. Each gemstone with it’s inclusions is unique, intriguing and often inspiring. Anthony de Goutière is a Graduate Gemologist specializing in the photomicrography of gemstone inclusions.

]]>Her Royal Majesty Queen Elizabeth II wore a brooch designed by Canadian Designer, Rachel Mielke, to church with Prince Phillip in England. Saskatchewan Lieutenant-Governor Vaughn Solomon Schofield presented her Majesty with the tourmaline, diamond and freshwater pearl brooch last October at Buckingham Palace.
The Queen looking stunning in a wonderfully coordinated outfit of pink and soft grey which gave the perfect backdrop for the subtle purple hues of the brooch. “I know how much work goes into her wardrobe, so to see the Queen wearing the brooch only three months after receiving it was unexpected”, says Rachel Mielke, the CEO and head designer behind Hillberg & Berk. “Hearing the news and seeing the photos was a very special moment for me and my entire team.”

]]>A 2,000-km journey and some “truthful and honest people” have allowed a Thunder Bay man to track down a treasured ring he received from his girlfriend and thought he had lost forever.
The ring was given to Paul Marshall by his then-girlfriend and current fiancée Debra Young for his 40th birthday — and was the first ring he had ever been given by anyone.
Marshall said he lost the ring six months ago while working at one of the machines at GRK Fasteners, a manufacturer of specialty screws in Thunder Bay. It was only later in the day he noticed the ring was missing from his finger.
Marshall said that when he told Young he had lost the ring, she said not to worry about it.
“She kept telling me that [she] didn’t spend thousands of dollars on it,” Marshall said.
But Marshall was disappointed. “I don’t care [if] you spent $5. It means a lot.”
He spent the next day looking through boxes of screws that he had packaged, without any luck.
“I could not find it, and I pretty much wrote it off at that point,” he recalled. “[I thought] the chance of me ever getting this back will be next to zero.”
But what Marshall didn’t count on were the keen eyes of two construction workers in York, Maine.
That’s where the ring turned up, having travelled more than 2,000 km in a box of screws.
‘I’m just amazed that people went to that much trouble to find me.’– Paul Marshall
“The two guys were working in an attic, and the one guy saw the ring in the package. So did the other guy,” Marshall
said.
The two construction workers and their boss set out to solve the mystery of the ring’s owner.
“The boss went to the local lumberyard, where they buy their screws,” Marshall said. “He got in contact with our rep down in the area, and she asked for the initials that are on the package and got in contact with us. That’s how our boss ended up talking to the guys.”
The ring is now in the mail, headed back to its rightful — and grateful — owner.
“That’s a lot of people that have got to be honest and truthful along the way, and I’m just amazed that people went to that much trouble to find me,” Marshall said.

Marshall and Young plan to get married in the summer of 2015.

]]>Breathing new life into their heirloom jewels is exactly what Marleen, her daughter and I did on a cold and
snowy day in January at our Palko Jewellery Design studio. The two ladies, after much discussion and deliberation, decided upon this 14KW Pendant that would allow the Centre Stone and 4 Side Stones to be as close to the original layout of Delie’s, Marleen mother’s, engagement ring.
Thank you Marlene for graciously sharing Delie’s pictures and story with us. What a delight in viewing all of these pictures, making it all so much more a Personal Moment in Time.
